Dr. Viyan Udawatta is a gastroenterologist in Raleigh, where he cares for patients with gastrointestinal and liver conditions, with a particular focus on inflammatory bowel disease. He graduated magna cum laude from Case Western Reserve University with a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry and cognitive science.
He founded GI Compass to help healthcare professionals navigate evolving evidence and apply it in everyday clinical decisions. As its founder and clinical architect, he leads the translation of published guidance and research into practical decision pathways, bringing clinical experience to the app’s design. His goal is to support both the decision at hand and the knowledge clinicians carry forward.

GI Compass is built around structured clinical pathways rather than an open-ended conversation. The goal is to help clinicians work through clinical questions without composing prompts or reading through lengthy generated responses. A consistent format also supports learning, making it easier to revisit the reasoning behind a decision.
AI-assisted tools support parts of the development process, but the app’s clinical pathways are developed under physician direction and reviewed before release.
GI Compass brings focused decision support and education into everyday clinical work. It complements society guidelines, primary literature, and other reference tools by helping clinicians navigate clinical questions in a structured format. It supports, rather than replaces, the treating professional’s clinical judgment.
GI Compass grew out of Dr. Udawatta’s experience caring for patients with IBD and discussing diagnostic and treatment questions with colleagues. Those conversations highlighted a shared challenge: navigating an expanding body of evidence and determining how it applies to an individual patient.
The project began as a practical IBD resource and expanded as he recognized opportunities to bring the same approach to other areas of gastroenterology and hepatology.
Development starts with published medical society guidelines, supported by the studies they cite and relevant research published afterward. Evidence is assessed for its methods, strength, and applicability to the clinical question.
Dr. Udawatta leads this process and translates the evidence into the app’s clinical inputs, decision pathways, and guidance. AI-assisted tools help identify and synthesize source material under his direction. He personally reviews and approves every module’s clinical recommendations before release.
Dr. Udawatta monitors new guidelines and research through ongoing journal review and conducts scheduled reviews of the app’s clinical content. User feedback also helps identify areas that need clarification, correction, or reassessment.
Clinical content can contain errors, and evidence evolves. Reported concerns are reviewed, and changes to recommendations undergo clinical review and approval before release.
Clinical calculators are free. Plus unlocks all released Plus clinical decision-support modules. Monthly ($19.99) and annual ($199.99) plans provide the same Plus access.

If you switch to another app without closing GI Compass, your current case stays open so you can return to it; fully closing the app clears it. Never enter names, dates of birth, record numbers or other patient identifiers.
